We took a young novice forager for a walk around our village to identify plants growing wild that have uses as foods and medicines. He was able to name four different forageable items which we collected and photographed. He then conducted research and wrote this document for our files.
INTRODUCTION
What is foraging and why is it important?
Foraging activities, such as hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants, are still practiced by some communities around the world. These traditional foraging practices not only provide sustenance but also maintain cultural traditions and foster a deep connection with the natural world. Foraging is becoming popular again now. Food costs more all the time but we have many plants growing for free all around us that we can use for food and medicine.
1. Dandelions
Dandelions are vibrant yellow flowers that are often considered weeds. However, they have remarkable qualities. The entire plant, from the roots to the flowers, is edible and packed with nutrients. Dandelion leaves can be used in salads, while the flowers can be used to make tea or even dandelion wine. They’re also known for their fluffy white seed heads, which children love to blow on and make wishes. The chinese have used dandelions for medicinal purposes for over 1000 years
2. Broad dock leaf flower
Broadleaf dock leaf, also known as dock plant or simply dock, is a common plant with large, broad leaves. It’s often found growing alongside dandelions. Dock leaves are famous for their soothing properties. If you happen to get stung by a nettle, rubbing the sap from a dock leaf on the affected area can help alleviate the irritation.Dock seeds (both Rumex obtusifolius and Rumex crispus) are actually in the same family as buckwheat, which is well known for its healthy and nutrient-rich seeds. And to me, the taste of the ground seeds is not dissimilar to buckwheat seeds and flour.
3. Nettles
Nettles are fascinating plants with stinging hairs that can cause temporary discomfort. However, they have numerous uses. Young nettle leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals, making them a nutritious addition to soups, teas, or as a cooked vegetable. Nettles have also been used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, such as allergies and arthritis
How to make nettle rope
Pinch the eye in one hand and twist the strand that is furthest away from you, twisting away from yourself. Whilst keeping this twisted, now bring that strand towards you, over the other strand, and repeat the process with the other strand. Roll to the right, then cross over to the left.
4. Cleavers
Cleaver plants, also known as stickywilly or goosegrass, are unique plants with small, hooked hairs that allow them to cling to surfaces. They have a long history of use in herbal medicine. Cleaver plants are believed to have diuretic and detoxifying properties. They are often used in teas or as a topical treatment for skin conditions. These plants may seem ordinary at first glance, but they all have their own remarkable qualities and uses. From the edible and nutritious dandelions to the soothing dock leaves, and the versatile nettles and cleaver plants, nature never ceases to amaze us with its diversity and benefits.
